The Uknighted Chemistry Graduate Student Association (UCGSA), the Biology Graduate Student Association (BGSA) and the Graduate Society of Physics Students (GSPS) in partnership with the Nonlinear Optical Materials and Sensors laboratory, Departments of Chemistry, Biology and Physics, UCF, and the support of the National Science Foundation (NSF), are delighted to announce the fifth annual “Orlando Chemistry Tutoring, Enrichment and Training Camp” (OCTET) and the third annual “Biology Integrated Orlando Training and Enrichment Camp” (BIOTEC). In addition, we are excited to introduce the “Physics Youth Scholastic and Instructing Camp for Orlando Scientists” (PhYSICOS). These activities have been designed to cultivate the future generation of young leaders in the pure sciences in the central Florida region, and to prepare the top 40 high school students (per discipline) from our seven counties (Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Sumter and Volusia) in the fundamentals of these areas of STEM to excel in these disciplines.

The lessons will be given by biology, chemistry and physics graduate student members of BGSA, UCGSA and GSPS at UCF. During the training sessions, instructors will engage students in problem-solving and informational activities while administering formative assessments to gauge the students’ progress throughout the camp. In addition, games involving scientific concepts and internal healthy competition will be held to stimulate the students’ interests in learning biology and chemistry.

In order to promote excellence and leadership among the region, and give the best opportunity to truly committed individuals, we demand a strong commitment from selected students, and their parents and teachers to this camp. Unjustified student absenteeism to more than two sessions will make them subject to automatic dismissal from the camp.

Some other important notes:

    • All cost associated with the camps (i.e. academic materials, etc.) will be covered primarily, by NSF and the science Departments at UCF. Lunch may or may not be provided depending on which camp the student attends.
    • It is policy of this program to request a parental permission for participation and photograph release for ACS publications.
    • All teachers who recommend the students will also be welcomed to attend the sessions of the camp.
